GENERAL INFORMATION

BURTON TENNIS & SQUASH CLUB

Brief History Lesson

The Winshill Tennis Club, was in existence by 1912, but then opened courts on the south side of Ashby Road in 1921 changing its name to Ashby Road Tennis Club. A squash court was added in 1971 and the clubhouse was opened in 1980. The club changed its name again to the present Burton Tennis and Squash Club in 1994.  In 2008 the clubhouse had a facelift and has come flying back into the 21st century.

Administration

The sports club is an independent members club run by a voluntary committee elected at the annual general meeting held in July. The club also holds a further EGM meeting in November where it sets the membership fees for the following year. Agenda items can be raised at both meetings by contacting the secretary beforehand. You can also raise issues/suggestions with any committee members - we meet up once a month.

Opening Times

The sports club  is open from 9am until 11pm each day. The bar is open from 6.30pm-11pm. Members should use their key card to gain entry to the club. This is a non-contact “proximity” card, which should be held near the sensor to the left of the main car park entrance (in winter) and on the right of the porch door at the bottom of the stairs (in summer), then wait for a moment for a click/light. To maintain security, please do not hold the door open for anyone that you do not know. We would advise you not to leave valuables unattended in the club.

Booking Courts

Squash court and tennis floodlight tokens can be obtained from behind the bar each evening so please ensure that these are obtained in advance of any games booked. Used team/match tennis balls may be available to borrow.

Please note that both tennis and squash courts must be booked to guarantee play.

Booking stamps are now used to book squash courts during peak hours at £2.00 each, the opponent then pays £2.00 for the tokens for the lights. The booking sheets for squash courts 1, 3 and 4 go up on Saturday morning and court 2 goes up on Wednesday morning.  This is to ensure that those unable to attend the club on a Saturday still have a chance to book a court. There is also a facility for you to book a court by calling the club on Wednesday morning between 9am and 11am.  To be able to do this you must first provide a sticker which is left behind the bar in your name.  This sticker can then be used to book your court when you telephone.  Courts that are not required can be sold to retrieve the booking fee .

Light tokens for tennis are bought as required and are not tied to any particular session so stickers are not required.  The tokens cost £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for juniors and last for half an hour.  Courts are booked via the booking sheets and these normally go up Saturday mornings. There is also a list of forthcoming tournament fixture dates beside the sheets which can affect availability especially during the summer.

An opponent should be arranged before you book any court. Peak time courts (4-10pm and weekends for tennis)   Other courts must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance and preferably 3 days in advance (use white stickers). Courts cancelled less than 24 hours in advance should be paid for at the bar where applicable. It should be possible to cancel the court by ringing the club on 565043 (especially during the evening when the bar is manned). If you notice any courts that were not “played” then please circle them on the booking sheet with a note so the committee can review and caution regular offenders.
