NAMIBIA PROJECT

In the summer of 2011 a group of fifteen 6th formers from the local Abbot Beyne School will travel to Namibia to make a difference in the day to day lives and education of those living in this under privileged country.   The total cost of the trip is £36,000. The money will enable them to make a long term difference to a struggling rural community which includes rebuilding a school for youngster.  Congratulations goes to club members Steve Green, Jake Green and school friend Ally Talbot who climbed Tryfen and Snowden in 10 hours and 50 minutes raising £500 towards this project. A BIG THANK YOU goes to all the club members that contributed towards this.  Well done all.

On Friday 27 August, Jim Morrison, chairman of the Trust, ward sister Jackie Whiteland, Anne Picken and Liz Williams, from the neonatal unit, attended the clubhouse to receive the cheques for the money raised at the race night and the charity ball. The first cheque was for the scanner appeal ( £1000 ) and the second was for the Neonatal Unit (£880).   Congratulations and thanks go to all who contributed to both nights and to all members who put their hands in their pockets.

Duffers Doubles - held on Sunday 11 July was a blazing success with the biggest turnout ever.  There was such a brilliant atmosphere and everyone enjoyed themselves.  The weather was gorgeous and the level of tennis was fantastic.  Congratulations to the winners - Phil Brailsford and Paul Baker.  They played a well fought match against Rob Lathbury and his son Nick.  Andy & Martin Corbett are seen here presenting their Father’s trophy (Stuart Corbett).  A big thank you to all who helped with the organising and tidying up, especially Heather and Steve Green and to Pete Scobie and his partner for the BBQ.Thank you to Jimmy and Maddie for acting as ball boy/girl.  The evening continued into the night with those that stayed for the World Cup Final and the Pizza delivery.  FANTASTIC - WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT......    To view more photos of the day view the new slide show in the photo gallery.

Squash League Success 2010

The lads can boast a 100% team win record for their first season in the men's Derbyshire Squash League and have achieved the double by winning the league (division 6) and the cup (section C). It has been a season when the lads (Owen, Tom and Lewis) have shown a dramatic improvement from the start of the season when they were struggling to be competitive, to the end of the season when they were all tending to be dominant in their own playing positions. The overall individual rankings achieved within the league as published on the Derbyshire league website are: Owen No2, Lewis No5 & Tom No42.

They have all thoroughly enjoyed their first full squash season and along with on court success have had some good nights out, eating everything in sight and playing snooker and pool at various locations around the county.

The summer League is due to start Thursday with the introduction of three new lads (Tom.W, Jake and Brandon) and will hopefully bring all the lads on, enjoying both the social and a high standard of squash.

The target for next winter season will be to keep the lads together and move them up two divisions to div 4 in order to keep them at the right level to be fully challenged, with the ultimate target for all of the lads of playing division one derbyshire squash. Burton have just made the historic step of winning the Derbyshire League division 1 for the very first time.

Colin moved to Burton, East Staffordshire in 1966. He has been a member at Burton Tennis and Squash Club (formerly known as Ashby Road) for more than three decades, initially as a squash player. His first position on the club’s committee began as bar secretary in 1980. He then succeeded into the position as Treasurer in 1983, which continued for an astounding 23 years until 2006. Today Colin still continues to be involved in the business and financial day to day management of the club.

Always demonstrating enthusiasm in whatever role is undertaken, Colin is by many admired for his tireless commitment and efforts behind the scenes to sustain the philosophy of the members run club. Colin is a loyal volunteer who demonstrates excellence in his adaptability of his skills contributing to the clubs success.

He acts as an ambassador for the club always exhibiting an approachable and friendly attitude. He exhibits a broad depth knowledge of the history of the club, always supporting the club’s values and strategic initiatives.  His communication and networking abilities assisted the club to achieve a successful bid in 2003 from Sport of England Lottery Fund for a grand total of £73,678 to perform surface improvements, new floodlights, disabled access to clubhouse and courts.

Colin after standing down from the role of Treasurer in 2006, could not severe his loyalty from the committee and was elected, following an overwhelming support from club members the role of Vice Chair and was entrusted with an Honorary Life Membership. To reward Colin for his compassion and commitment to the club, in 2006, two annual awards were given his name The Colin Bagshaw Most Improved Junior in Squash and similar to the sport of Tennis.

Colin takes ownership of his role and decisions, participating with community and professional organisations and embraced the opportunity last year of welcoming  President Stuart Smith of the Lawn Tennis Association to the club.

As a senior club official he provides myself as Chair an insurmountable level of support and guidance of leadership. Words to describe Colin would be calm, intelligent, warm, sentimental and hard working, wise, modest, knowledgeable, loyal and above all trustworthy.

2009

Happy new year to all our members. A great night was had by all those that turned up to celebrate the New Year at the club. Thank you to all those that brought food. It was brilliant. Keep an eye out for Nigel Stilgoe who has the photos taken on the night.

Membership Renewal Forms

Yes it is that time again where we need to deliver the new application forms so that you can renew your membership. This year, to save on postage, they will be available in a box at the club and addressed to the main member if part of a family. They should be available sometime in January. Those not collected by end February will then be posted. Please help us by ensuring you collect yours, and remember you have until end March or beginning of April at the latest to return them to the membership secretary.

You will notice that each member now has to complete their own form. There are two types of forms one for junior members and one for adult members. This is necessary so that we can collect more individual information about our members to show our diversity. Please ensure that you complete these forms in full otherwise it will delay your application. Those few members who take their time returning their forms will run the risk of being excluded from the club as it will be considered that they do not wish to renew....Even those members who pay by Direct Debit or are Life/Bonded members MUST complete the forms. Any queries please contact Jackie Stilgoe - Membership Secretary.

Congratulations to Burton LT & SC for being one of the first two clubs in Staffordshire to achieve the Tennis Clubmark. This provides a framework and helps clubs to develop and to ensure their programmes; policies and procedures are all in line with best practice. In achieving Tennis Clubmark we have demonstrated our contribution to British Tennis and that we are continually improving the quality of our club.

Clubmark is a cross sport quality accreditation programme that demonstrates we have recognised standards of child protection, coaching, equality and good management, which will attract and keep members, improve the club profile and build for our future.

I wish to express my thanks to the committee members who assisted me in the hard work to achieve this for the club.

Well done everyone.
